Summary:
🚀 Building momentum, but a long road ahead
While the UK is gaining strong traction in the semiconductor sector, it's clear there's still a significant journey ahead to become a global leader. The future will demand a more targeted approach, where the UK focuses its efforts on areas of greatest strategic value.
🌍 Niche strengths, fragmented ecosystem
The UK has world-class capabilities in niche areas like compound semiconductors and flexible integrated circuits. However, the broader ecosystem remains somewhat fragmented. Greater cohesion is needed—particularly among regional clusters—to avoid internal competition and instead foster collaboration that can scale globally.
💡 Semiconductors: the hidden enabler
From AI to quantum computing to electric vehicles, semiconductors underpin many of the UK’s most exciting tech frontiers. Yet, they’re often overlooked in public and policy discourse, which affects efforts to attract a broader, more diverse talent pool into the sector.
💸 Finance as a key bottleneck
Access to long-term capital remains a challenge for semiconductor startups and scaleups. The sector requires long-term investment horizons, and while the payoff can be huge, it’s rarely a quick win. Continued support from both public and private investors is critical to overcoming this barrier.

Sprint Campaigns
techUK's sprint campaigns explore how emerging and transformative technologies are developed, applied and commercialised across the UK's innovation ecosystem.
Activity includes workshops, roundtables, panel discussions, networking sessions, Summits, and flagship reports (setting out recommendations for Government and industry).
Each campaign runs for 4-6 months and features regular collaborations with programmes across techUK.
techUK's latest sprint campaign is on Robotics & Automation technologies. Find out how to get involved by clicking here.
Running from September to November 2023, this campaign explored how the UK can lead on the development, application and commercialisation of space technologies, bring more non-space companies into the sector, and ultimately realise the benefits of the New Space Economy.
These technologies include AI, quantum, lasers, robotics & automation, advanced propulsion and materials, and semiconductors.
Activity has taken the form of roundtables, panel discussions, networking sessions, Summits, thought leadership pieces, policy recommendations, and a report. The report, containing member case studies and policy recommendations, was launched in March 2024 at Satellite Applications Catapult's Harwell campus.
