Government publishes Rapid Tech Assessments for Robotics & Humanoids

Today the Government Office for Science (GO-Science) published two pieces of research and analysis of relevance to the UK's robotics and humanoid robots sectors.

Rapid technology assessments (RTAs) are accessible introductions to different technology areas for policymakers, aiming to support government departments to make better strategic decisions on science and technology. These assessments use evidence and expert insight to set out recent technology developments, potential applications, and opportunities for government alongside challenges and potential risks.

Robotics

Key takeaways from the Robotics RTA include:

  • UK Robotics Market Growth: In 2023, global sales of professional service robots reached 205,000 units, marking a 30% annual increase. The UK leads in robotics research quality and ranks third globally for early-stage private investment in robotics.

  • Technological Advancements: Recent innovations in AI, sensors, materials, and electronics have enhanced robot capabilities, enabling greater autonomy, precision, and adaptability across various sectors, including manufacturing, healthcare, and logistics. In particular, advances in AI are resulting in improved sensing and vision, multi-agent control, learning and autonomy, system efficiency, and human-machine interaction.

  • Strategic Opportunities: The UK is well-positioned to leverage its strengths in marine, nuclear, medical, and agricultural robotics, plus more broadly across Research & Development (R&D). However, challenges remain in translating research into commercial success and addressing new risks such as increasing vulnerability to cyber-attacks.

You can read the full Robotics RTA here.

Humanoids

Key takeaways from the humanoids RTA include:

  • Technological Complexity: Developing humanoid robots necessitates a sophisticated integration of hardware, sensors, and software. While advancements have been made since the 1980s, achieving a general-purpose humanoid robot for commercial use remains a significant challenge.

  • Current Applications: Presently, humanoid robots are primarily utilised in controlled environments, such as factories or warehouses, and often serve as immobile information points or novelty items.

  • UK's Position: The UK excels in research quality, ranking first globally by Field Citation Ratio (FCR), but lags behind other nations like China, the USA, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and Canada in overall volume of humanoid publications.

  • Cost Considerations: The estimated cost for a single humanoid robot ranges between $40,000 and $150,000, posing a barrier to widespread adoption and commercial viability.

  • Future Potential: Looking ahead, humanoid robots with advanced mobility, dexterity, and autonomy could find applications across various sectors, including healthcare, education, and customer service, contingent on overcoming current technological and economic challenges.

Sprint Campaigns

techUK's sprint campaigns explore how emerging and transformative technologies are developed, applied and commercialised across the UK's innovation ecosystem.

Activity includes workshops, roundtables, panel discussions, networking sessions, Summits, and flagship reports (setting out recommendations for Government and industry).

Each campaign runs for 4-6 months and features regular collaborations with programmes across techUK.

techUK's latest sprint campaign is on Robotics & Automation technologies. Find out how to get involved by clicking here.

New Space

Running from September to November 2023, this campaign explored how the UK can lead on the development, application and commercialisation of space technologies, bring more non-space companies into the sector, and ultimately realise the benefits of the New Space Economy.

These technologies include AI, quantum, lasers, robotics & automation, advanced propulsion and materials, and semiconductors.

Activity has taken the form of roundtables, panel discussions, networking sessions, Summits, thought leadership pieces, policy recommendations, and a report. The report, containing member case studies and policy recommendations, was launched in March 2024 at Satellite Applications Catapult's Harwell campus.
