Technology and the Policing Reform White Paper: six months on – event round-up

On Monday 22 June, techUK convened policing leaders to discuss progress since the publication of the “From Local to National” Policing Reform white paper.

Key takeaways from the session:

  • CC Rob Carden KPM, Chair of the DDaT Coordination Committee at NPCC, highlighted the creation of a new Chief Digital Information Officer (CDIO) role and centralised DDaT function as key steps forward, stressing the importance of national standards, interoperability and scalable solutions.
  • Tony Blaker QPM, discussed about the importance of scaling local innovations nationally, using blueprints and secure platforms. He also discussed about the move to structured national contracts, aimed at supporting dynamic, multi-supplier frameworks to encourage competition and SME involvement.
  • Jo Gore, Deputy Chief Scientific Advisor for Policing, OPCSA, emphasised evidence-based decision making, workforce development, and genuine industry partnerships, highlighting the Policing Problem Book as a tool to support industry engagement and new solutions. She also highlighted the existence of a National Crime Agency Problem Book, which is shared internally with policing and CTP to identify and desensitise common issues for wider publication and industry engagement, though sensitive topics make this challenging.
  • Ed Preece, Chief Operating Officer at PDS, highlighted PDS’s work on network strategy, cloud, interoperability, and digital skills, emphasising the need for clear prioritisation.
