techUK's responds to Parliamentary inquiry on integrated transport

techUK has responded to the House of Commons Transport Committee’s inquiry on integrated transport. The Committee is preparing to scrutinise the Government’s forthcoming Integrated National Transport Strategy (INTS), which will “set the high-level direction for how transport should be designed, built and operated in England over the next 10 years”. They have asked for ideas about how to mould transport services, networks and options around the journeys that people need and want to make in their daily lives, and they will scrutinise the INTS with reference to the evidence gathered in this inquiry.

Summary of techUK’s submission

Our response highlights the importance of user-centric transport integration. A truly joined-up system should feel seamless, intuitive, and reliable, with unified ticketing, coordinated timetables, real-time information, and accessible infrastructure. Integration also requires aligned governance, responsive disruption management, and adaptability to new technologies.

Key barriers to integration include fragmented governance, limited data-sharing, infrastructure gaps, and short-term funding. We call for systemic reform, including open data standards, inclusive design, and long-term, ring-fenced funding. We think that integration should be evaluated not only on journey time but also on broader benefits like cost reduction, increased access, and improved quality of life.

Integration can drive behavioural change, encouraging a shift from private cars to public transport, walking, and cycling. It supports environmental goals, public health, and social inclusion by improving access to jobs and services. However, it’s vital that we mitigate unintended consequences, especially for vulnerable groups. Across all contexts, emerging technologies like AI and autonomous vehicles are key to future transport systems.
