On June 8th, as part of a series of announcements during London Tech Week and at the Government’s AI Adoption Summit, the government has launched a £1.1bn “UK AI Hardware Plan”, which aims to secure UK future capabilities across semiconductors, compute and AI. You can read the full plan on gov.uk here. 

Today, 3 June 2026, the European Commission unveiled its European Technological Sovereignty Package, a broad set of initiatives designed to strengthen Europe's position across semiconductors, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, open source technologies and digital infrastructure.

techUK has published its first report on photonics, the science and technology of light, which sets out how the UK can position itself as a global leader in photonics technologies and lead the next wave of photonics innovation and deployment.

On Monday the 20th of April, techUK hosted a series of talks looking at how we can move chips up the policy agenda, through leveraging government ambitions across AI and other emerging technologies.

Launched in March 2026, this year-long initiative will discover how the UK can lead on the development and deployment of Frontier Compute technologies. 

Innovate UK will become more deliberate about what technologies, sectors and businesses they support under a new strategy that is designed to address the challenge of transforming world-class research and early-stage innovation in the UK into globally competitive businesses. 

techUK recently brought together the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), Innovate UK, and EPSRC to launch the UK’s Advanced Connectivity Technology (ACT) R&D programme, a four-year initiative backed by £270 million in funding.

On 5 March, techUK hosted an event focusing on Future Careers in Emerging Tech, held as part of National Careers Week and the TechTogether campaign.
