techUK's Frontier Compute focus series

Launched in March 2026, techUK's Frontier Compute focus series is a year-long initiative designed to discover how the UK can lead on the development and deployment of the technologies set to underpin the next generation of computing. Key paradigms include quantum, photonic and neuromorphic paradigms, in addition to other emerging modalities that push beyond conventional silicon and Moore's Law.

Frontier compute is the next phase of compute set to enable wide-ranging innovations and applications through the convergence of advanced hardware, software, and infrastructure. Such technologies move and process data in fundamentally different ways to conventional compute technologies such as CPUs and classical computers.

Some approaches harness the novel properties of quantum physics (quantum), others are inspired by how the human brain works (neuromorphic), and others use light instead of electricity to move and process data (photonics). These new approaches, often in combination with each other, promise to solve problems with which today's classical computers struggle, often at a fraction of the energy use or latency.

Frontier Compute is far more than an end in itself. Instead, it’s the foundation upon which a new wave of transformative applications will be built across sectors in which data is everything. Examples include physical AI systems that can interact with complex environments in real time, computers that can process vast quantities of data for climate modelling, or intelligent sensors that process health data at the edge. Frontier Compute therefore sits at the heart of a healthy, secure, productive and prosperous UK.

The UK has a narrow window before global leaders in quantum, photonics and neuromorphic technologies lock in the standards, infrastructure and supply chains that will define the market for decades to come. This is our opportunity to turn world-leading research and innovations into successful companies that adopt, scale and export the next wave of Frontier Compute technologies.

Realising this opportunity will require tackling pervasive challenges including high energy costs, limited grid capacity, competition for land and sites, a skills pipeline too dependent on the PhD route, and a track record of world-class UK research scaling into companies that end up moving overseas. Global challenges include supply chain dependencies, access to overseas talent, and cyber resilience.

This focus series maps closely onto the priorities set out by the new Burnham government, including its commitment to spreading investment and skilled jobs beyond London, and building the industrial capacity behind a wider re-industrialisation agenda. Frontier Ccompute is particularly well placed to deliver on this: the UK's research and industrial strengths in these technologies already span well beyond the capital, from photonics and compound semiconductor clusters in Wales, Scotland and the South West, to neuromorphic and quantum research based in the Midlands and Southampton.

Event Round-Ups

Representatives of techUK member companies have access to regular speaking, writing, policy, collaboration and sponsorship opportunities. This includes speaking on panel events, attending invite-only workshops or roundtables, shaping our policy asks, partnering on a joint event, or sponsoring techUK events or reports.

The focus series will culminate in a report featuring policy recommendations for industry and government outlining the strategy, regulation, infrastructure, and investment required for UK leadership in the next frontier of compute. This report will be published in early 2027 and shared with decision-makers across government and key stakeholders. All policy recommendations will build upon existing government initiatives, including the Compute Roadmap, AI Hardware Plan and national Photonics and Neuromorphic Roadmaps.
