AI & Data

Regulating AI and data is one of the central challenges in current tech policy. With constantly evolving technologies, techUK’s Digital Regulation Team support members with navigating this ever-changing policy landscape, providing resource, expertise and a forum for discussion.

AI and data policy are of critical importance to the tech industry. One of the emerging challenges in regulating the sector is establishing how to enable growth and development in these industries, without sacrificing the UK’s high data protection standards. techUK have long advocated for an approach to AI and data regulation that is pragmatic, flexible and pro-innovation throughout our briefings, consultation responses, events and reports that we compile.

The passage of the Data (Use and Access) Act represents an enormous opportunity for the UK’s ever-growing data economy. The landmark legislation promises to unlock enormous benefits; namely, opening up data sharing capabilities, creating a framework for the widespread usage of Smart Data Schemes, and facilitating the increased deployment of automated decision making. techUK’s Digital Regulation Team looks forward to working with the ICO as they approach implementing the legislation, ensuring that the wealth of potential benefits it encompasses are unlocked to their fullest degree.

Similarly, as the Government prepares to legislate on AI regulation, techUK have long been pioneering our vision for what pro-growth and pro-innovation AI regulation should look like. Through extensive engagement with members, we have identified several priority areas to ensure AI-specific risks are addressed, whilst retaining the broader enabling conditions that underpin effective regulation. These priorities include: fair appointment of liability and responsibility across the AI value chain; timely and expert institutional oversight, which we work with the AI Security Institute to Support; and, approaching deployment through a whole-economy lens to ensure any regulatory regime is realistic, proportionate, and does not inadvertently create barriers to market entry or scale-up.
