HM Treasury and HRMC seek views on proposals for the design and administration of UK CBAM

HM Treasury and HMRC have published a consultation on the proposals for the design and administration of the UK Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

A CBAM is a measure implemented by governments to account for the carbon cost of producing imported goods and minimise carbon leakage, where production and emissions shift to countries with less stringent decarbonisation policies. The UK Government announced plans to implement a CBAM by 2027 back in December 2023.

This consultation will be relevant to members that use emissions intensive industrial goods from the aluminium, cement, ceramics, fertiliser, glass, hydrogen, as well as iron and steel sectors.

Submissions

The consultation concludes on 13 June 2024. techUK will be responding, and members are welcome to share their views during a scoping call that will take place on Thursday 2 May between 1 and 2 PM. For those unable to attend, input can be sent to Weronika Dorociak ([email protected]).
