From Aspiration to Implementation: Lightbulb Moments for Trade Digitalisation

#TradeDigitalisationWeek - Guest Blog: Aba Schubert, Co-Founder and CEO of Dorae explains how digital tech can make trade more sustainable

Like the advent of electric lighting revolutionised manufacturing – not by fundamentally changing any manufacturing process, but merely by enabling existing goals and supporting efforts to scale – digitalisation is transformative to global trade.

Its impact comes in both predictable and surprising ways.

Digital tools can be applied to documentation, information sharing and data collection and analysis.  Efforts to digitalise can be used by trade participants unilaterally or in cooperation.

The classic outcomes of this matrix are highly desirable results like more efficient or resilient production processes and supply chains, more vibrant trade communities and more effective policy implementation.

At Dorae, we are constantly exploring how digital technology can be used across sectors, borders and stakeholders to add value.  Dorae is a software application used to keep track of physical objects and manage the activities around them.  In other words, Dorae is about connecting the myriad dots of industrial activity, business processes, transportation, border crossings and compliance – a complex global web with almost unlimited potential for technology gains.

On a practical level, each of our customers comes with unique know-how and pain points.  By using Dorae’s flexible tools, we help them do things like:

  • enable dynamic information sharing across participants in complex transport logistics networks – saving time and reducing losses from error and theft;
  • implement multi-tier supply chain surveillance to improve resilience by balancing “just in time” with “just in case”; and
  • build robust quality control and certification compliance programs by capturing well-structured and manageable data sets.

Every day is a feast for the intellectually curious, and we feel great when a customer says that they have finally found their “Cinderella” software product in Dorae – one that feels like it was made just for them.  These are the predictable wins for leading TradeTech products like Dorae, which has been named a Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum for its leading work in the space.

But sometimes there are surprises.

What started as a conversation about using Dorae to effectively document the provenance of timber for Blue Tree Forestry, an innovative new UK forestry business, evolved into a roadmap for using the breadth of Dorae’s features and collaboration tools to support Blue Tree’s plans to generate high-integrity and fully transparent carbon credits for individuals and enterprises.  Blue Tree is creating a scalable source of sustainable timber while increasing biodiversity, replenishing depleted soils and improving water retention.  Dorae will be used for data management and analysis to support Blue Tree’s circular approach and memorialise the information needed for their forward-thinking sustainability goals.

By building upon the lessons learned from the deployment of digital tools across the financial sector and the traditional information needs of trade in intangible goods, the use of Dorae by Blue Tree for its carbon credit management is an exciting new development.  It illustrates for consumers and policy makers how new technologies can give substance to requirements and credentials that even just a few years ago were only aspirational and not actually implementable.
