techUK hosted a webinar exploring Northern Ireland's journey to 94.2% gigabit-capable broadband coverage with industry leaders from Openreach, Fibrus, VMO2. Along with insight from Building Digital UK on Project Stratum/the Shared Rural Network and techUK's most recent Local Digital Index.
Following the launch of techUK’s Digital Local Index 2023, Northern Ireland showcased a rapid increase in gigabit broadband availability and is leading the way as 86% of premises have access. Ofcom’s Connected Nations 2023 revealed that more than nine in 10 Northern Ireland homes can access full fibre broadband, over 51,000 more than last year. And that 5G availability is gathering pace. Nearly three quarters of a million Northern Ireland homes have access to full-fibre broadband – higher than all other UK nations.
This webinar heard from industry leaders on how this was achieved, what more can be done to reach the full rollout of gigabit-capable broadband, and what more can be done to improve access to 5G.

Sophie Greaves
Sophie Greaves is Head of Programme for Communications Infrastructure and Services at techUK, and oversees the UK Spectrum Policy Forum.
Sophie was promoted to Head having been Programme Manager for Communications Infrastructure and Services, leading techUK's telecoms activities, engagement and policy development. Previously, Sophie was Programme Assistant across a variety of areas including the Broadband Stakeholder Group, Central Government, Financial Services and Communications Infrastructure programmes.
Prior to joining techUK, Sophie completed a masters in Film Studies at University College London; her dissertation examined US telecoms policy relating to net neutrality and content distribution.

Tales Gaspar
Tales Gaspar
Tales has a background in law and economics, with previous experience in the regulation of new technologies and infrastructure.
In the UK and Europe, he offered consultancy on intellectual property rights of cellular and IoT technologies and on the regulatory procedures at the ITU as a Global Fellow at the European Space Policy Institute (ESPI).
Tales has an LL.M in Law and Business by the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV) and an MSc in Regulation at the London School of Economics, with a specialization in Government and Law.
