Emerging Tech Working Group Launching This September

In September, techUK will launch a brand-new Emerging Tech Working Group.

This will bring together many of techUK's most innovative member companies to build new connections, receive timely sector updates from senior stakeholders, collaborate on ensuring UK leadership at the convergence of emerging technologies, and shape techUK's future Emerging Tech activity.

The ambition is for the group to represent a broad range of technologies and sectors, including but not limited to AI, Quantum, Robotics, Semiconductors, Immersive, Web3, Creative, Space, and Gaming.

Upon selection, members will meet around early-mid September to determine specific objectives for the following year before convening in London or online on a regular basis (likely every 8 weeks) to track and drive progress over the following year.

Any techUK member companies that are working in the emerging technologies sector and interested in applying to join the Working Group are invited to complete this short Expression of Interest form  by close of play on Thursday 4 September.

The Emerging Tech team will then review all Expressions of Interest to ensure that successful Working Group members are reflective of both the aims of this group and the diversity of our membership (in terms of company size, area of technology or expertise, and geographical location).

We look forward to launching this brand-new techUK Working Group and please reach out to [email protected] for more information. You can also find a list of FAQs below.

FAQs

Why is the Emerging Tech Working Group being established, and what will its role be within techUK?

This Working Group is being established following growing interest from techUK members and government stakeholders around how the UK can leverage the development, adoption and convergence of emerging technologies to transform industries and unlock new economic and societal value.

The Group will ensure join-up across key techUK programmes with an interest in emerging technologies by sourcing representatives from members spanning key programmes, regularly inviting other programmes to bring relevant discussion topics or activity proposals to meetings, and reporting back to relevant techUK Councils and Working Groups as appropriate.

The Working Group's members will span a wide range of emerging technologies and serve as a forum through which techUK can be alerted to key technological developments and trends as they emerge, consider the implications of these in a holistic manner, and shape our subsequent emerging technologies activity and outputs.

Who within an organisation is best positioned to participate in this Working Group?

Membership of this Working Group is best suited to individuals who work in technology strategy or government affairs, have a broad understanding of their organisation's activity across emerging technologies, and regularly engage with a wide range of stakeholders throughout the UK tech sector. While the Group is probably not best suited to individuals with a technical, operational, or financial role, expressions of interest will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. We are ideally seeking individuals with a seniority of Senior Manager or above, however again decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.

What is the expected time commitment for members of this group?

Members will be expected to meet for approximately one hour every 8 weeks (in London or online via Microsoft Teams) and commit to delivering on any actions in between meetings that have been jointly agreed (these are entirely dependent on the member's capacity and willingness to commit to said actions).

What are the likely outputs of this group?

Outputs of the Working Group could include specific emerging technology-related events (run solely by techUK or as partner events), policy asks (to then be tested with techUK's wider membership), or papers and reports on particular topics. Initial outputs will be determined by Working Group members at the inaugural meeting in early to mid September, with subsequent outputs to be determined on an ongoing basis.
