Contribute to techUK's Photonics insight series!

techUK's excited to announce that we're now seeking contributions for an upcoming insight series exploring how the UK can lead on the future development and application of photonics technologies.

This will form part of our upcoming Photonics sprint campaign. Running from September to December, this will convene senior representatives from the UK's Photonics ecosystem, identify the key applications of Photonics technologies across sectors and industries, and explore how the UK can lead on the development and deployment of these technologies.

How to contribute

techUK member organisations and wider stakeholders can submit a short blog or vlog exploring how technologies are shaping, enabling or transforming the development and application of photonics technologies.

Submissions should also align with ONE of the following themes:

a. Skills and Talent: How can the UK develop and ensure access to the right skills & talent to turn its world-leading Photonics research into commercially viable products and services?

b. Funding: How can UK businesses secure funding to develop and scale Photonics technologies?

c. Infrastructure: How can the UK strengthen its infrastructure (including compute, telecom networks, and production or testing facilities) to ensure resilience and readiness to lead on the development and application of Photonics technologies?

d. UK Ecosystem and Collaboration: How can the UK foster collaboration across academia, industry, and government to realise the potential of Photonics technologies?

e. International Leadership and Supply Chains: How can the UK leverage its world-leading Photonics capabilities to enhance global supply chain resilience and drive commercial success in overseas markets?

Please email your submission to [email protected] by 14 October. Contributions will then go live on 28 October.

Once live, contributions will be featured on techUK's flagship Innovation Hub, included in our monthly Tech & Innovation newsletter, and promoted via our social channels (LinkedIn & X).

Contribution guidelines

All submissions must be of broad relevance to the UK's technology sector (rather than a sales pitch or case study format) and be accompanied by an author headshot, brief biography, and the logo(s) of your organisation.

Blogs must contain between 600 and 1000 words. They can include links, images, infographics and videos.

Vlogs must be between 3 and 6 minutes in duration, be submitted with a short title (10 words max) and intro text and take the form of a YouTube link or MP4 file. Email us your video through https://wetransfer.com/ (instructions here). You can find an example vlog here.

Your contribution will go live on 28 October, subject to the disclaimer below.

Disclaimer: Maximum of one submission per organisation. Priority will be given to techUK member organisations and Government stakeholders over non-members. techUK reserves the right to decide whether or not a blog or vlog is published and contributing factors include the degree of alignment with the contribution guidelines, total number of submissions received, and balance between member and non-member contributions.

More information about techUK's Photonics sprint campaign

This insight series is part of techUK's photonics sprint campaign, a four-month programme of activity which aims to convene senior representatives from the UK's Photonics ecosystem, identify the key applications of Photonics technologies across sectors and industries, and explore how the UK can lead on the development and deployment of these technologies.

Activity will include panel discussions, workshops, webinars, roundtables, networking sessions (such as our sector meet up, which will launch the campaign and take place on 10 September), blogs/vlogs, and tech demos.

The sprint campaign will culminate in a report (much like techUK's recent Gaming and Esports report), to be launched in Q1 2026, setting out the themes explored during the campaign and featuring member / stakeholder case studies and practical recommendations for industry / Government. This report will aim to advance the sector and begin to address the main challenges and opportunities that have emerged during the campaign.
