A new chapter for AI in policing: the launch of PoliceAI
The College of Policing and the Home Office have formally launched PoliceAI: the new national centre for AI in policing.
Backed by £75m of Home Office funding and building on the NPCC's AI portfolio, PoliceAI represents a significant step forward in the structured, national-level adoption of AI across all 43 forces in England and Wales.
What is PoliceAI?
PoliceAI brings together operational policing expertise and AI capability under a single national body, hosted by the College of Policing. Its mandate is clear: to deliver AI tools that are responsible, transparent and trusted, and that produce tangible benefits for officers, victims and the public.
The centre is already advancing several high-impact initiatives, including:
Automating and quality-checking case file preparation to speed up charging decisions
Identifying and categorising child sexual abuse material, reducing officer exposure to traumatic content and supporting faster investigations
AI-powered analysis of CCTV and digital evidence to generate early investigative leads
PoliceAI is also standing up the PoliceAI Threat Hub (PATH), which will support forces in responding to the criminal misuse of AI, including deepfakes and other emerging threats.
Responsible adoption at scale
A defining feature of PoliceAI's approach is its commitment to transparency and public accountability. Every AI tool delivered will be subject to rigorous testing with human judgement at the centre, with a public-facing register of AI use in policing already in development.
Public confidence in AI-enabled policing will depend on consistent standards, clear governance and genuine openness about how and where these tools are being used.
What this means for industry
The formal establishment of PoliceAI changes the landscape for technology suppliers working in policing. A national centre with a defined mandate, national reach and a structured approach to procurement and deployment presents a great opportunity for the tech industry.
For suppliers, this is the moment to understand PoliceAI's priorities, align product development with its emerging standards, and engage constructively with the governance frameworks being put in place.
Our Justice and Emergency Services Programme is focused on the evolving role of AI in policing and the wider justice system, particularly around assurance, governance and responsible adoption. We are examining how emerging AI capabilities can be used safely and ethically, and what operational, legal and organisational considerations need to be addresses when deploying AI in high-stakes environments.
We are working closely with PoliceAI as it develops its capabilities and supplier relationships, ensuring that industry perspectives are represented early and consistently.
