FDM Group Returners Programme

FDM Group Logo

The FDM Returners Programme is dedicated to supporting professionals who have taken a career break or have been furloughed, to help them on their journey back to work.

This seven week learning and development programme consists of specialist training and ongoing support, building upon leadership and management experience as well as IT and business knowledge. Following completion of the training period, individuals go on to become FDM Consultants, working on-site with one or more of their 400+ prestigious clients for a minimum of two years. After the two years, individuals either transition permanently to the client or remain with FDM as senior Consultants. To find out more click here.

"The FDM training was intensive but excellent – a really great scope of subject matters, some of which were refreshers and others that were invaluable introductions to new systems and software. During my time at FDM, I built a new network of colleagues and friends within my training group." - Claire Gardner, FDM Consultant, placed at Legal and General

“The programme helped me to find what I wanted to do and provided me with a path to get there. I found each week of training rewarding and all the trainers were extremely supportive. FDM really helped me get back to work, giving me the confidence to continue my career after taking a break to raise my family.” - Helen Van der Straaten, FDM Business Consultant, placed at News UK

“FDM’s Returners Programme has been really beneficial to News UK and is an excellent way of bringing people and businesses looking for talented and experienced individuals together.” - Paul Wilson, Programme and Portfolio Director, News UK

“My main reason for applying to FDM’s Returners Programme was due to the difficulties in getting back into the IT job market. I saw the programme as a way to help build my confidence, renew and strengthen my skill sets, and to provide me with the opportunity to get my career back on track. FDM returners are a group of remarkable people who have so much to offer and contribute. We can once again look forward to building successful careers within the IT industry.” - Suzanne Lowe, FDM Consultant, Save the Children

“I have been delighted with Suzanne’s progress since she started at Save the Children. It was immediately apparent that she possessed a wealth of experience in Agile frameworkes (XP and Scrum). Her career break was not a concern due to her past experience in various companies. Her knowledge has been a huge asset to the organisation.” - Michael Grosvenor, Project Office Manager, Save the Children

“The Returners Programme complements FDM’s overall business model. Consultants have a wealth of life and business experience, often with a background in in technology, supporting us to successfully deliver results.” - Karl Hoods, CIO, Save the Children

How HP LIFE, the HP Foundation’s free online learning resource, is helping people build business skills for the future

hplife.png

At HP we recognise education and digital equity as fundamental human rights and two of the key foundations for sustainable development. Unfortunately, throughout the COVID-19 pandemic 463 million students have been unable to access vital remote learning resources as a result of unequal access to technology. As a result, their access to quality education and subsequent opportunities for employment and personal development have been fundamentally limited.  This is why HP has announced a commitment to amplify digital equity, whereby we aim to improve learning outcomes for 100 million people by 2025 and accelerate digital equity for 150 million people by 2030.

One of the ways we do this is through HP LIFE, a free IT and business skills training program from the HP Foundation. HP LIFE provides the opportunity to build business skills for the future— whether people want to start or grow their own business, re-enter the workforce or secure a better job.  HP LIFE offers more than 30 free courses targeted towards students, entrepreneurs, innovators, and small business owners, which can be taken online and offline. Each HP LIFE course is self-paced and usually takes between 30 minutes and 1 hour to complete. Following successful completion of the course, users are awarded with a certificate of completion. Alongside this, the HP LIFE team also runs free webinars for those wishing to train others using this resource.

HP LIFE is available to anyone wishing to advance their communication, innovation, finance, marketing, and operations skills! So far, over 1.3 million HP LIFE courses have been taken globally and we currently have over 491,000 learners across more than 200 countries and territories.

We are really pleased that this resource can now be accessed via TechUK’s Returners Hub or directly here (www.life-global.org/).  This provides people with the opportunity to retrain, gain new skills or start new businesses; and they can do so from home – making this a free, easy, convenient, and covid-safe way to learn and gain new skills.

QA Return | (Re)Train Programme

QA's Return | (Re)Train initiative is a returner programme that supports employees two-fold in returning to work after a career break: offering the opportunity to return, or start, a new role supporting the tech sector.

As the UK’s leading IT and business skills provider (specialising in training, consultancy, apprenticeships and post graduate degrees on a range of technical and leadership subjects), The Return / (Re)Train programme will be offered across QAs state-of-the-art UK-wide training centres – from our Training Academies to flexible online learning provision. The new programme will encourage returning parents to launch new careers in the tech sector and builds upon QA’s unparalleled portfolio of learning solutions.

“Parenting often unlocks a passion for teaching or supporting others,” says Lisa Harrington, Managing Director of QA’s Learning division. “At QA, we’re so excited to be able to offer roles that allow people to follow their passions and impart new skills – and in the growing tech sector, these training roles are in high demand. It’s all part of our commitment to transform lives and careers, upskill the UK’s workforce and help employers fill their tech skills gaps.”

The dedicated programme will help returners harness newly discovered teaching skills and launch rewarding careers in tech, helping delegates and apprentices on IT and business programmes upskill and take the next steps in their own careers. For those who are completely new to teaching, QA will offer fully-funded TAP-accredited training programmes in training delivery. QA has also introduced a new specialised training course for returners to build confidence, leadership and communication skills. Returners also enjoy a phased three-month settling-in period in which they are paired up with a colleague “buddy” for support.

The programme also offers returners flexible working contracts and a 25-day holiday package with the option to buy five additional days. Like all QA employees, returners are also entitled to three days of free training per year from QA’s 1,500+ courses to upskill on any topic they choose. And in such a fast-evolving company, progression opportunities abound.

“Returners offer such an untapped wealth of talent and we value the fresh perspectives and diversity they bring,” says Harrington. “As an education and training provider, we want to set a new standard for attracting, supporting and retraining returners in tech – and turn getting back to work into an exciting experience.”

To sustain this, we have committed ourselves to a programme of continuous improvement led by our Diversity Director - and driven by every single one of our colleagues. We strive to create a culture of opportunity and inclusion and are devoted to encouraging more talent into our sector.

Sage Logo

We are acutely aware that there is a very sought after talent pool in the technology sector and we have to do whatever we can to increase the size of it if we are to enable our business to thrive and if we are to enable this country to become a digital nation of significance. Specific emphasis is on challenging ourselves to do more and we have vigorous communities inside our business which initially supported STEM subjects for after-school clubs but are branching out to include mums and dads too! More and more we are realising that rather than waiting for the children in the car, dragging parents into the classroom too could be the way forward – and stimulating their continued engagement is a way of creating interest and involvement across the whole family. The power of having access to subject matter training whilst their children are doing their own learning is a massive opportunity.

So with that context, Sage is extremely proud to encourage women returners and working parents by offering a number of flexible working options, part time hours, between school hours 10-2pm, term time working and the opportunity to work from home when required in many roles. We offer childcare vouchers via a tax efficient scheme to both male and female employees to support early years and after school care. Never one to shy away from policy issues, we also work alongside government to promote and highlight the accessible childcare agenda hosting business and government events in our London Bridge office to discuss the issue and to drive more action around the initiative to champion the cause of diversity and inclusion.

We recognise that confidence can be an issue when returning to work. So, experience has taught us to offer comprehensive inductions and training programmes – for example, for all telephone-based roles, with full product training is provided, so that even if women have been out of work for a while (sometimes years), if they have basic IT skills we can develop them to be confident and successful. Grounded in the North East, we pride ourselves on being highly practical and inclusive and we work very hard to encourage applicants from all backgrounds and ages to join us.

Also on offer is a comprehensive apprentice programme, which from 2017 won't just apply to young people but to anyone who wants to start a career in technology. We’re also showing our passion and belief in this area with the recent introduction of a shadow board from a group of our apprentices and rising stars to challenge the direction of travel for the business and we are certainly learning a lot! #FeedbackIsAGift

In this changing world, these are exciting times – to do the right thing, and to create opportunity for all.

There will be the opportunity to network internally with senior members of the organisation, and a buddying system to ensure your enjoyment of the programme.  Flexible working is available and it is the aim of the programme to offer you a permanent position at the end, although this is not guaranteed. There will be a one week break in the programme coinciding with the half-term school holiday.

Virgin Money is particularly interested to hear from career returners with Technology backgrounds.
