The issue of Build vs Buy – that is, whether public sector bodies should opt to build their own custom technology products and solutions, or buy COTS solutions – is a perennial topic of discussion in public sector tech procurement, and is one that techUK members often raise with us. A range of members have recently expressed different views on how these decisions are made, the consistency of that decision making across the public sector, and whether there is a role for our sector to play in helping contracting authorities reach the most appropriate decision to help them deliver for citizens.

So we are convening this informal roundtable discussion to understand members’ views on this topic, gather insights on good practice, reflect on current guidance on this topic, and explore what role the industry can play in supporting public sector bodies reach the decision that’s best for them.
