Ofgem is seeking views on proposals about how Artificial Intelligence (AI) should be used responsibly and safely in the energy sector to encourage more innovation.

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has set out what regulators should do to make sure that the sectors they regulate follow the UK’s AI regulatory principles in their ‘A Pro-Innovation Approach to AI Regulation’ AI White Paper.

As the energy regulator for Great Britain, Ofgem is providing an outline of our strategic approach to the use of AI.

Ofgem believes that there is value producing regulatory guidance and tools to the sector on the risk-based use of AI in the energy sector, requiring collaboration in the sector to:

  • Keep abreast of AI developments ensure consistency
  • Tailor our regulatory tools for AI

Ofgem’s AI Strategy

Ofgem highlights the current and potential role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the UK's energy sector. It acknowledges AI's importance in supporting the sector's development and evolution towards achieving Net Zero carbon emissions and ensuring energy security.

Various applications of AI in the energy sector are outlined, including assisting in managing diverse energy sources, optimising energy markets and networks, and enhancing operational delivery to consumers through communication and engagement.

While recognising the potential benefits of AI, such as improving energy supply security and market operation, the strategy also acknowledges the novel challenges it presents. Despite these challenges, Ofgem emphasises its pro-innovation approach aimed at facilitating the use of AI for societal benefit, aligning with its mission to positively impact energy consumers through independent regulation.

Collaboration with regulators and representative bodies underscores the comprehensive approach taken in shaping the sector's AI strategy.
