The Health Foundation's recent report, "Digitising the NHS and Adult Social Care: What Could It Cost?", provides an analysis of the financial requirements to transition the UK's health and social care services to a fully digital framework over the next five years. The report estimates a total investment of £21 billion, encompassing both capital and operational expenditures necessary for infrastructure development, staff training, and system maintenance. 

Key Findings 

  • Total Investment Required: £21 billion over five years to digitise health and social care services across the UK. 

  • Capital Expenditure: £8 billion allocated for hardware, software, electronic patient records, cybersecurity, and Wi-Fi infrastructure. 

  • One-off Revenue Costs: £3 billion dedicated to planning, initial training, and transitioning staff to new IT systems. 

  • Recurring Operational Costs: £10 billion over five years for ongoing training, software licensing, and maintenance. 

  • Geographical Allocation: Approximately £14.75 billion of the total investment is earmarked for England.
