Ports are major entry points for countries and states, ensuring the flow of goods with acute impact on Critical National Infrastructure (such as food, chemicals, and medicine). Recent announcements affecting UK ports—including the creation of eight new Freeports—and the deployment of 5G in Belfast Harbour by BT and Verizon in the Port of Southampton (in collaboration with Nokia) have underscored the timeliness of exploring the role of Private Networks in ports.

How these networks are built (whether by mobile network operators or the port owners themselves), the benefits 5G and advanced connectivity can bring to the efficient and secure flow of goods, plus learnings in the logistics sector will all be explored in this session.

Emerging technology enabled by enhanced coverage and advanced connectivity, such as robotics and the use of drone technology across the transport and logistic sector could also be considered during the workshop. The growing adoption of drone technology across the transport and logistics sector could drive a GDP boost of £1.2bn and, with an uplift in productivity, net the sector cost savings in the region of £2.8bn over the same period.

Speakers:

  • Mick Goulding, Commercial Director, Cellnex UK
