The APPG for Broadband and Digital Communication is delighted to confirm that Minister for Digital Infrastructure Matt Warman will join its next meeting to discuss the recent announcement on Project Gigabit, the UK Government’s programme of work to support the delivery of nationwide gigabit-capable broadband. David Clarkson from Ofcom will also join our event to give an overview of the regulation of UK’s wholesale telecoms markets announced on 18 March.
More than one million hard to reach homes and businesses will have next generation gigabit broadband built to them in the first phase of the £5 billion government infrastructure project, which is targeting a minimum of 85% gigabit-capable coverage by 2025. The Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme is also being relaunched with up to £210 million to give people and communities in eligible rural areas the opportunity to work with registered suppliers to get gigabit speeds.
Gigabit services will help boost national and regional economies, improve the resilience of our networks and help transform how we deliver public services.
The Minister for Digital Infrastructure will provide an overview of Project Gigabit, and his department’s plans for delivery, with time for questions from attendees.
The announcement of Project Gigabit also included plans for:
- Connecting public sector buildings as fibre “hubs” in rural areas
- A consultation on improving broadband for Very Hard to Reach premises
- An update on the work of the Barrier Busting Task Force
- In the same week, Ofcom published its findings from the Wholesale Fixed Telecoms Market Review 2021-26, setting out its plans to regulate the fixed telecoms markets that underpin broadband, mobile and business connections
The All-Party Parliamentary Group for Broadband and Digital Communication seeks to further the rollout of broadband in rural and urban areas, and to look at digital communication across the UK. Secretariat is provided by techUK, the trade association that brings together people, companies and organisations to realise the positive outcomes that digital technology can achieve. The APPG is chaired by Selaine Saxby, MP for North Devon.
