Early Tech Career Network at Intel - Intro to IoT
The Early Tech Career Network was established by techUK and its members for people just starting their career in tech (either as graduates, apprentices, entry-level roles or because of a career change).
The aim of the network is to connect people starting in tech with individuals going through similar experiences and hear from expert guest speakers in senior positions about their career path, with an introduction to an area of tech.
The third techUK Early Tech Career Network event looked at the Internet of Things (IoT). Discussion was kicked off by Derek Pearsall, Account Executive for EMEA Cloud Service Providers at Intel who outlined the basics of IoT and spoke about his experiences in dealing with Cloud services becoming the catalyst for business transformation. He told the group of Robert Noyce’s, co-founder of Intel, words, “don't be encumbered by history. Go off and do something wonderful”, which resonated as the Q&A looked at Derek’s thoughts on the future of innovation.
Accenture’s Anton Kruse, who works on Capital Projects as Digital Business Integration Manager, shared his career journey within tech and provided some excellent business use cases of how IoT can create data sets to support smarter working across a range of industries. He showed a demo of a construction site – looking at ways data can be collected to see the most productive areas of the site which sparked a conversation about data ownership and consent. Both speakers looked at their career progression including how they got to where they are and what opportunities they sought out – something the group really seemed to enjoy.
Intel also provided the group with a tour of their fantastic Innovation Zone, demonstrating a piece of tech that uses ultra-soundwaves to feel virtual objects. The group felt virtual objects in a game scenario with their bare hands a few inches in the air. As you’d expect many Fifth Element jokes were made.
The event offered a space for people to connect with others who are also new to the sector – networking to build a platform for support is something that has been found to be invaluable when beginning a career in tech.

Prior to joining the team, she worked for the UK Labour Party and New Zealand Labour Party and holds a BA in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from the University of Manchester and is currently studying MA Strategic Communications at King’s College London.
