Matt Vickers MP, Co-Chair of the APPG on the Future of Retail, and techUK are delighted to be holding a panel discussion on ‘Technology and the Future of the UK High Street’ – hosted in the House of Lords by Baroness Grey-Thompson DBE DL. Please note that it will not be possible to join this session virtually.
It has been ten years since the Portas Review identified a range of challenges faced by UK high streets. Many of those challenges – from business rates to parking – are still relevant in 2021. While many high street businesses have adopted digital technologies in their response, more can be done to support high streets to adopt and leverage technology to improve the high street experience and respond to the needs of local communities.
techUK has published a report ‘Technology and the future of the high street’ which explores how technology can provide opportunities for businesses and local authorities to support the growth and recovery of the UK’s high streets following the COVID-19 pandemic. The paper also makes policy recommendations to support digitisation, in alignment with government strategies such as the Plan for Growth and the Levelling-up agenda.
This event, chaired by Matt Vickers, Co-Chair of the APPG on the Future of Retail, will discuss some of the key themes of the report including:
- How can digital technologies support high street and small businesses? How can Government help these business to digitise?
- How can technology help put the high street at the centre of the local economy and community and build social capital?
- Where does technology fit in to changes to infrastructure, accessibility, mobility and sustainability around UK high streets?
- How can tax and business rates changes support the regeneration of local high streets across the UK?
