techUK launches Cloud 2020 & beyond report

This report considers where action is needed in the next three years to drive greater cloud adoption and ensure that organisations across industry and government are cloud-ready for the next phase of the UK's digital evolution.

Cloud computing is increasingly providing the platforms, infrastructure and computing power for businesses looking to explore and adopt emerging and transformative technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT). With the potential of advanced digital technologies to increase economic growth and productivity, the continued adoption and use of cloud computing holds the key to unlocking this economic value for organisations across the UK.

To ensure we keep the UK at the forefront of cloud adoption, techUK has identified the actions needed to ensure the UK remains a leader in cloud adoption, optimisation and technical implementation and has a vibrant and competitive cloud ecosystem.

The “Cloud 2020 and Beyond – Unlocking the full power of the cloud” report launched today

is a follow up to techUK’s Cloud 2020 Vision published in 2016 which made a number of recommendations to drive greater uptake of cloud computing services.

As well as providing a progress report on these recommendations, this new report identifies where action is needed beyond 2020 to drive greater cloud adoption and ensure UK organisations are cloud-ready for the next wave of the digital evolution. Cloud 2020 and Beyond provides recommendations in the following seven areas that need to be addressed to ensure this happens:

  1. Bake in a data portability and system interoperability by design approach into cloud procurement
  2. Ensure cloud services are being adopted and used securely
  3. Equip organisations with the understanding, skills and knowledge to make the right cloud decisions for them
  4. Raise awareness of the sustainability and environmental benefits of cloud adoption
  5. Deepen and widen public sector usage of cloud services
  6. Ensure a technology neutral approach to the legal and regulatory framework for cloud
  7. Work harder and faster to achieve full fibre connectivity is key to drive cloud adoption forward.

The digital release of this report coincides with techUK’s annual Cloud Campaign Week, during which a rich array of content pertaining to the future of the UK’s cloud computing ecosystem will be published.

Commenting on the importance of cloud computing to the UK’s digital future and the reports launch, Sue Daley, Technology & Innovation Director, said:

“The good news in the UK is progress has been made in the adoption and use of cloud computing services since we published our Cloud 2020 Vision in 2016. However, now is not the time to be complacent.

“The amount of data being created is increasing. With this, organisations are taking greater advantage by beginning to use emerging technologies, such as AI, to offer more competitive digital services. At the core of delivering these services is the cloud and it is therefore a key productivity and growth driver across all industries and sectors.

“There are, however, still barriers holding back the increased adoption and greater use of cloud services and these must be addressed now. We must ensure UK businesses are able to unlock the full power of the cloud. This will allow them to remain agile and flexible to change, as traditional industries go through a process of digital transformation.”
