Preparing your business for the future relationship

Between 31 January 2020 and December 31 2020 the UK is in a transition period from its position as an EU Member State to a fully outside the EU Single Market and Customs Union.

During this transition period most business conditions (unless explicitly stated in the Withdrawal Agreement) remain unchanged.

During the transition period the UK Government and European Commission are seeking to negotiate a free trade agreement to set the terms of trade between the UK and the EU once the transition period ends. If no deal can be agreed, then the UK will exit the transition period with a non-negotiated outcome.

However, irrespective of whether there is a deal or a non-negotiated outcome, December 31 2020 will mark a significant change in business conditions requiring additional steps for business to trade goods, services, transfer personal data and move people in and out of the EU/EEA.

Businesses across the tech sector must therefore prepare now for the UK’s new relationship with the EU which will take effect on 1 January 2021.

techUK understands that this is an uncertain process, as while some changes are known, for example the need to prepare to complete import and export declarations for goods traded with the EU, the full detail on the new relationship will not be available until the end of negotiations.

techUK will keep our EU Exit hub up to date with new guidance as and when it emerges.

This will also include resources such as mailing lists, webcasts and FAQs to help the tech sector locate the information it needs.
