techUK is delighted to bring together the Distributed Ledger Technologies Working Group and the Financial Services Programme for this joint roundtable session exploring what the potential development of a CBDC will look like in the UK.

This follows the announcement of a consultation on the development of a CBDC by the Bank of England later on this year. This development of a CBDC could be used by households and businesses alike for their everyday payments needs. It would exist alongside cash and bank deposits, rather than replacing them.

As such, techUK is excited that the Bank of England will join this session to give a brief overview of the work so far on CBDC's alongside a small update on next steps, before the two working groups convene to discuss:

  • What format should a CBDC take in the UK; what use cases would particularly thrive off a CBDC?
  • What is the role of blockchain in this. If blockchain is used, how can we ensure it is done so in a secure and sustainable way
  • Are there any international best practice that the UK can learn from?
