techUK is pleased to facilitate the Digital Drivers Innovation Session on 18 January 2023 from 10:00am – 2:00pm.

Every day, the road network represents one of the highest risks to the safety of the UK public. The UK Government is committed to improving road safety and a key element of that commitment is to leverage the use of digital technology to achieve this outcome. Road safety in the Digital Age embodies all elements of the driving environment including the user, vehicle, infrastructure, information and the use of data and analytical tools to identify and drive change.

Digital Drivers is an ambitious initiative, which has come about as a result of the Home Office funding Gloucestershire Constabulary to investigate road safety and reduce the number of accidents. The first Digital Drivers project focuses on younger and older drivers and is examining the use of technology and innovative techniques along the following four themes: Knowledge, Insight, Wellbeing, and Investigation. Please see the attached document for more information on each theme.

The session aims to convene tech companies who could help develop a better understanding of the technologies and techniques that could contribute to further development of these themes. In particular, the project team would like to understand how similar challenges are being addressed in other transport sectors and by commercial road operators.

The Session will seek to address a number of questions including:

  • What techniques are available to enable contextual pull, push or nudge of information based on driver performance?
  • How do we monitor a driver's mental and physical fitness to drive?
  • How can we improve the monitoring of the road network to identify risks (vehicles, drivers, conditions)?
  • Vehicle technology exists to improve safety yet many drivers do not invest in it - how do we increase the adoption of technology?
