AI thought leaders and innovators are being sought for a new taskforce that will inform, shape and drive the way Artificial Intelligence is used and developed in the Liverpool City Region.

From accelerating medical research to revolutionising learning in schools and transforming industry, the City Region is home to world‑leading AI expertise and infrastructure – with local researchers, businesses and public services already using the cutting‑edge technology to improve lives.

Made up of volunteers, the new expert advisory group will help shape the City Region’s long-term AI strategy to ensure Artificial Intelligence is used responsibly, effectively and for the greatest public benefit.

It will also guide the UK’s first regional Chief AI Officer, Tiffany St James, in crafting a roadmap that puts the Liverpool City Region firmly at the global forefront of harnessing AI for Good.

Establishing the Task Force is a key part of delivering Mayor Steve Rotheram’s AI ambitions and follows the success of the City Region’s second AI Summit in October, which welcomed internationally renowned speakers and showcased the region’s AI strengths.

Local initiatives include the Combined Authority-led piloting of AI‑powered learning in 45 City Region primary schools.

Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram said: “I want the Liverpool City Region to be the home of ‘AI for Good’. For me, that’s about innovation that puts us at the heart of the AI revolution, improves the lives of our 1.6 million residents, and creates opportunities for local people and businesses.

“This taskforce will help shape how artificial intelligence is developed and used across our region in a way that’s ethical, inclusive, and of course focused on people.”

The City Region already hosts a range of world‑class assets, including the Digital Innovation Facility, the Virtual Engineering Centre, the Civic Data Cooperative and the UK’s most powerful supercomputer dedicated to industrial R&D, located at Sci‑Tech Daresbury.

With strengths in quantum computing also growing, the region is well placed to lead in the next generation of AI and data technologies.

The Combined Authority is now seeking volunteers with experience in AI research, development, ethics or real‑world implementation to join the group.

Members will design a co-ordinated roadmap for AI adoption and innovation, spanning health, education, transport, industry and public services, helping to identify opportunities, challenges and emerging trends.

Individuals with knowledge of key sectors such as health and social care, transport and education are particularly encouraged to apply. Successful applicants will join the Task Force for two years, meeting quarterly in the region. UK travel expenses will be reimbursed.

Liverpool City Region Chief AI Officer Tiffany St James said: I'm excited to have the opportunity to work with brilliant people who can help us move the dial on better outcomes for people through the smart use of AI in the region. If this is you, please apply - or share this opportunity more widely: having the right mix of disciplines is critical for diverse thinking.”

Expressions of Interest are open until 31 January 2026.
