The UK’s technology trade association techUK along with Welsh Water and Scottish Water are hosting a two-part event series focusing on the migration from the Publicly Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to an All-IP solution, and the migration’s impact on the water sector.

The move to an All-IP solution will be delivered by Communications Providers (CPs) by 2025, and customers and businesses that rely on the PSTN are seeking a reliable and resilient communications solution in its place. Use cases in the water sector include remote points of presence, such as river and flood monitoring. For very rural and hard-to-reach locations, mobile technology may not offer the coverage required by water companies.

At this virtual event, Welsh Water and Scottish Water will present the scale of the challenge in replacing the PSTN and finding an alternative solution for endpoints across its network – eg there are currently c400 endpoints in Welsh Water’s network that do not have identified solutions. techUK members will learn more about the opportunity for tech companies and the routes in which members can engage with the Welsh and Scottish Water teams directly. Both water companies will also expand the picture with the effects on other water companies across the UK, showing the scale of the challenge.
