Join this discussion to feed into Home Office policy on the safe, effective and ethical use of biometrics data and emerging technologies in policing.
In light of the DCMS consultation Data: A new direction, the Home Office are seeking industry views on the best ways of deploying technologies, such as facial recognition, to increase public safety while maintaining or enhancing public trust.
This roundtable will partly focus on the specific data reform consultation questions relating to the use of biometric data in policing, and in part focus on policy preparedness for future technologies.
Further details and agenda to follow.
The key questions for the session are:
- Are rule changes - e.g. around data retention - problematic from a technical perspective? Are particular types of rules more problematic than others?
- What sort of legal framework can provide the flexibility to keep up with technological development, while giving technology companies the assurances they need to invest with confidence?
- To what extent do the police, as a consumer, drive or hinder market innovation?
The data reform consultation questions for consideration are:
Q4.4.8. To what extent do you agree with the following statement: ‘There is an opportunity to streamline and clarify rules on police collection, use and retention of data for biometrics in order to improve transparency and public safety’?
Q5.8.1. To what extent do you agree that the oversight framework for the police's use of biometrics and overt surveillance, which currently includes the Biometrics Commissioner, the Surveillance Camera Commissioner and the ICO, could be simplified?
Q5.8.2. To what extent do you agree that the functions of the Biometrics Commissioner and the Surveillance Camera Commissioner should be absorbed under a single oversight function exercised by the ICO?
