In response to the escalating risks posed by deepfakes, the Home Office, Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, the Alan Turing Institute and Accelerated Capability Environment (ACE) have united to launch the Deepfake Challenge with a briefing event on Wednesday 1 May from 10:00 - 17:00. This collaborative initiative aims to assess the current state of deepfakes, identify gaps in existing capabilities and develop innovative solutions to combat the challenges they present.

Deepfake Detection Challenge - Briefing Event

Background

Rapid advancements in generative artificial intelligence are revolutionising deepfakes, making their creation increasingly effortless and convincing. What was once only seen in Hollywood studios with hefty budgets can now be achieved swiftly and inexpensively on everyday devices. However, this progress has also paved the way for malicious actors to exploit deepfakes for fraudulent activities, online exploitation, and election manipulation, posing a significant threat to global democracy.

This briefing event for the Challenge on the 1 May in Central London welcomes interest from organisations and academics, who would like to join forces and work together on the Challenge. They will be using a manufactured data repository which we will be synthesising as part of this project.

A Showcase will then follow, where industry leaders in this space will demonstrate practical solutions to the threats from deepfakes.
