This is a techUK event with GDS

The Blueprint for Modern Government, launched in January, represents a major step change for regions and local government, bringing them into central government transformation thinking. The Blueprint acknowledges the need to serve and connect the wider public sector, including local authorities and it positions local government as a key stakeholder in digital transformation, while pledging more work needed to support collaboration.

The new GDS incorporates the Central Digital and Data Office (CDDO), the Incubator for Artificial Intelligence and the Geospatial Commission into GDS, so therefore is a fundamentally different proposition to local government.  This includes the possibility of;

  • Making GDS products – including those from the Incubator for AI – accessible to local government;
  • Extending specialist talent programmes and adapting capability frameworks for local authorities;
  • Helping local government achieve better procurement outcomes, lowering data friction  and improving value for money;
  • Making it easier to share and use data across local government;
  • Deploying GDS capabilities to support local data innovation across all levels of government.

In the Blueprint, the new GDS commits to working with local government, MHCLG and other departments to collaborate on improving outcomes for citizens and those who serve them.

GDS is currently undertaking a 12-week sprint to look at how to GDS supports and innovates with local government – and working with industry is a key part of delivering that vision. Knowing that there is a lot of good work already happening in Local Government Digital Transformation but also being aware that it can be difficult to create methods and discipline in scale in turn creates opportunities for industry.

techUK GDS Blueprint for Digital Government – connecting Local Government brings together GDS and industry to as part of the sprint, ensuring industry is engaged in the conversation and part of the journey, considering what the benefits are of a north star for Local Government innovation and transformation.
