New Ministers of interest for the Climate, Environment and Sustainability Programmes

What does the Labour reshuffle mean for members?

Kier Starmer has reshuffled his ministerial team ahead of the Labour conference and there have been some eye catching appointments that members interested in our Climate, Environment and Sustainability programme. Despite the reshuffle taking place on 5-7 September it took a while for the government to confirm the exact responsibilities for the new ministers, and these are below.

Inevitably this does impact current work and we can expect some delays to ongoing projects as the new appointments will want to put their own stamp things, and as  is customary we have sent letters in the new ministers with our position on key issues. We look forward to working with the new team in the coming weeks and months and will keep members informed on any new initiatives.

Some key appointments are:

  • Emma Reynolds as Defra SoS: Emma Reynolds has been appointed Environment Secretary. She was previously a Treasury Minister and Steve Reed becomes Housing Secretary. Mary Creagh remains in place and is an mportant Minister looking at cirvularity and chemicals.
  • Peter Kyle as DBT SoS: Peter Kyle is now the Business and Trade Secretary. Peter iis well known to us from his previous job as Tech Secretary.
  • Liz Kendall as DSIT SoS: Liz Kendall is now the Tech Secretary after moving over from DWP.
  • Lord Vallance as Climate and Tech Minister: Patrick Vallance is now a joint Minister between DESNZ and DSIT, and has climate innovation and AI and energy as areas of responsibility.
