Energy Market Reform and Security – techUK
Energy Bill and REMA
We are expecting a new Energy Bill this year that could potentially address and create an opportunity for a contemporary, digitalised system, which could help transition us to net zero and provide a range of services to consumers at affordable prices.
Government has also issued the Review of Electricity Market Arrangements (REMA), focusing on the wholesale market, including all mature technologies. The REMA programme will take place alongside a refresh of the energy retail strategy, including consumer protection, retail market sustainability and financial resilience, as well as new business models and services that could support net zero.
Action: We are actively engaging with BEIS, taking part in all stakeholder meetings and will form a response accordingly.
Secure Smart Electricity Systems
Government has also identified the role of smart appliances, heat, and EV technologies as a crucial element of delivering flexibility and demand side response services. In their own words, this transition will reduce costs by up to £10 billion per year by 2050.
Action: We are currently conducting internal interviews with members on the main consultation and technical annex to form an official response. We will be following-up with Ofgem on licencing framework for DSR services.
Physical connections for data centres
techUK is engaging with members in our data centre programme to understand the challenges they are facing securing timely physical energy connections. We are engaging a range of actors in the energy sector include National Grid, SSEN and the Greater London Authority.
Energy prices
techUK is also working with Government to map and understand the impacts of raising energy costs in addition to existing supply chains issues on the wider tech sector. If you wish us to raise your concerns please provide any pressing issues as well as medium to long term impacts you foresee – email us on [email protected].
- Any immediate impacts that are currently being experienced by your business
- Are there any expected impacts that you foresee having a significant effect on your business in the next 3-6 months?
- Do you have any long term concerns about the viability of your business if supply chain issues are not resolved?
Further actions:
- Our Smart Energy and Utilities group is shortly publishing a position paper and a campaign on the crucial importance of digital tech-led transformation of the energy system. Placing digitalisation at the heart of a modern, sustainable, dynamic, and affordable energy for households, transport, and industry.
- techUK teams are collaborating in a Public Affairs Campaign on Tech-led decarbonisation: recommendations to government.
