About the Summit
The 2021 techUK Digital Ethics Summit marks five years since we first brought the digital ethics community together to discuss some of the biggest ethical challenges posed by the dominant role technology plays in our society. On the 8 December 2021, to commemorate the Summit’s fifth anniversary, we will take stock and reflect on the material progress that has been made globally over the past five years; celebrating the achievements, sharing international best practice and examining areas for improvement. The Summit will also be an opportunity to focus on the future, and question ‘What we need to do now to get the next five years right?’
So far this year we’ve experienced some significant developments across the tech landscape, from legislative proposals setting out the potential future of AI regulation, to a continued uptick in the public debate on ethics and tech companies stepping up their own approaches to these ethical challenges. In the UK, the Government has focused on a range of strategies, including the publication of a National Data, an upcoming UK AI Strategy, and a major set of intended reforms to the UK’s future data governance system. During the Summit we will critically assess the role these developments are playing in moving the dial and addressing key ethical questions, concerns and challenges that have been raised in the twelve months since last year’s Summit. We will also step back and review the role of the digital ethics community to determine how it can continue to remain relevant, credible, and influential as we look ahead.
By examining some of the most critically important digital ethics issues of the day, this year’s Summit will provide a global platform for industry, policymakers, academia and civil society to demonstrate cutting-edge, practical examples of how they’re addressing these challenges, whilst captivating the audience’s imagination on what can be achieved as we look ahead to the next five years.
