techUK is delighted to be welcome back the Greater London Authority (GLA) to engage in a second round of discussions on data centres across a variety of policy areas. This follows on from our engagement with Theo Blackwell, London’s Chief Digital Officer, earlier in the year and a productive roundtable in July.

techUK will be bringing together relevant members with GLA officials from digital infrastructure, environment, planning and business directorates and will be a fantastic opportunity to engage and educate officials on the requirements of Data Centre operators and vice versa. We will be using this as an opportunity to inform officials of the challenges that the sector is facing around energy connections – in this instance, particularly the West London hotspot – as part of our wider engagement on the issue.

The agenda will be:

  • What has been / is being developed (ha of land, floorspace, storeys/height, typology, use class)? – What are key operational, design and landscaping features/requirements?
  • Do/could schemes involve any co-location with other uses as well as active frontages (if yes, which and where)?
  • What are/could be specific benefits/opportunities of the schemes and their wider urban context – economic, social, environmental?
  • What are/could be specific mitigation measures to address negative impacts?
  • AOB
