techUK is holding a member-only roundtable with the Fraud Policy Unit to discuss the telecoms proposals in the recent Fraud Strategy.

Key actions in the Strategy include targeting the ways in which criminals undertake scams and abuse telecoms networks, and the primary focus of this roundtable is to discuss the review of “mass text aggregators”. We will also discuss the impact of potential user registration of these services.

The Home Office notes that while there are many legitimate uses for mass texting services, like restaurant bookings, appointment reminders and delivery updates, there is some evidence to suggest that these services are being abused by criminals.

The Home Office is working with law enforcement to build a threat assessment and to understand the role these services play in the fraud ecosystem.

The 19 July roundtable provides an opportunity for members to feed into the Home Office’s rapid review of the market that will complete in summer 2023.

Please note – this roundtable will take place in person at 2 Marsham Street, London, SW1P 4DF. Places are limited and by registering you are confirming you would like to attend. Attendance will be confirmed by email in w/c 10 July 2023. For further information please contact Sophie James, Head of Telecoms and Spectrum Policy.
