techUK members named alongside quantum businesses awarded 30 million for quantum computing
Science Minister Andrew Griffith has announced seven quantum companies who have been awarded multimillion-pound contracts to build a diverse range of quantum computing testbeds at the NQCC. Amongst the winners include techUK members ORCA Computing and Rigetti Computing. You can find out more here
The seven winners will work with UKRI and the NQCC to deliver quantum computing testbeds that will represent cutting-edge quantum computing solutions, implemented in a range of technology platforms and arhitecture This will provide valuable insight into the maturity, characteristics and capabilities of quantum across a range of hardware architectures as we move towards fault-tolerance.
Dr Michael Cuthbert, Director of the NQCC has stated that the next phase will be building towards the unique state of the art facility with on-premises access to a range of qubit modalities at scale.
techUK has previously held an event with Dr Michael Cuthbert exploring the exciting realm of the UK’s current quantum ecosystem, including the completion of the NQCC campus in Harwell, actioning the UK Quantum Strategy, and what can reasonably be expected in the advancement of quantum technologies for the rest of 2023 and beyond. This announcement is another example of pushing forward the National Quantum Strategy into Action by UK Government. The National Quantum Strategy, published in March 2023, commits £2.5 billion to developing quantum technologies in the UK over the ten years from 2024 - more than doubling current public investment, which will aim to generate an additional £1 billion of private investment into the programme. The strategy sets out a bold and ambitious approach to supporting quantum technologies in the UK across the broad spectrum of quantum computing, sensing, timing, imaging and communications. It sets out how the UK will develop its strengths across different hardware platforms, software and components, and reinforce our capabilities throughout the supply chains.
