Digital Infrastructure and Cloud

Digital infrastructure and cloud services underpin the UK’s digital economy, providing the connectivity, computing power and digital services that organisations rely on every day, from telecoms networks and data centres to cloud platforms and the compute behind AI.

We work with industry, government and regulators to build the investment and policy conditions the UK needs, so this infrastructure has the power, planning, skills and security it needs to stay resilient and sustainable as demand for AI and data-intensive technology grows.

Our take

Digital infrastructure and cloud are foundations of the digital economy

Digital infrastructure and cloud services underpin the UK's digital economy and are essential to future growth, innovation and resilience. They provide the connectivity, computing power and data capabilities needed to support artificial intelligence, digital services and innovation across every sector.

We believe the UK's future competitiveness depends on continued investment in these digital foundations. With digitally enabled activity generating £286 billion in annual GVA, digital infrastructure is no longer simply an enabler of economic activity but a foundation for growth, innovation and national resilience.

We work with industry, government and regulators through our Cloud, Data Centres and Smart Infrastructure & Systems programmes to support investment, shape policy and address the opportunities and challenges affecting the UK's digital infrastructure ecosystem. Together, these communities bring the expertise needed to help strengthen the foundations of the UK's future economy.

  • Global Context

Global demand for cloud services, AI and data-intensive technology continues to accelerate, increasing our need for resilient, scalable networks, data centres and advanced compute. The UK remains Europe’s largest data centre market, and We believe countries that invest successfully in these foundations will be best placed to attract investment, raise productivity and support long-term innovation.

  • UK Strategic Impact

The UK has attracted significant investment into data centres, cloud services and digital infrastructure, while recognising data centres and third-party cloud services as Critical National Infrastructure. Maintaining this momentum will require policies that support investment, resilience, skills and long-term growth across the sector.
