About this event
On Thursday 30 July techUK is delighted to be hosting the Home Office for an online member update on the ransomware proposals that the department consulted on last year.*
Session overview
In this year's King's Speech, government announced a new Bill to make the UK a harder target for states, dangerous groups and individuals seeking to attack the UK. The National Security Bill will seek to reform the cyber landscape through a number of measures, including those designed to tackle the pervasive threat to the UK economy and businesses posed by ruthless cyber criminals - in particular, the ransomware threat.
During this webinar, members will learn more about government's current thinking on the ransomware proposals, which aspects will be taken forward by the new Bill, and estimated timelines for its publication. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions.
*Please note that a separate session will be arranged in due course to cover the Computer Misuse Act reform elements of the National Security Bill.
A recap on the ransomware proposals to date
In early 2025, government sought views on a package of proposals to reduce the threat that ransomware poses to the UK economy. The three proposals consulted on were:
A targeted ban on ransomware payments for owners and operators of regulated-critical national infrastructure and the public sector.
A ransomware payment prevention regime.
A mandatory incident reporting regime.
