Innovating Industrial Decarbonisation: digital technologies enabling the transition

This techUK series explores the role that digital technologies can play in enabling decarbonisation of industrial sectors.

Industrial decarbonisation is critical in global efforts to mitigate climate change. In 2022, industrial emissions were 68 MtCO2e, 17% of UK territorial emissions.

The UK Government set out a 10-point plan for a green industrial revolution back in 2020, highlighting the need to leverage innovation to tackle climate change and grow the UK's green technologies.

Whilst recognising this is only part of the puzzle, this series focuses on developing, adopting, and integrating digital technologies into industrial processes to improve efficiencies, capture data, and optimise supply chains.

Indeed, there is a key role for digital technologies to play in supporting the Government's industrial decarbonisation priorities around: resource and energy efficiency (REEE), fuel switching, CCUS for process emissions and Greenhouse Gas Removals for residual emissions.

techUK works with businesses and stakeholders to develop effective policy and regulatory solutions to promote the digitisation of the economy, driving productivity and shoring up the UK's international competitiveness. We believe digital technologies offer significant opportunities to support this. But collaborative efforts between industry, government, and the tech sector are vital to deliver meaningful and scalable results in the net zero transition.

Catch up on the webinar series here:

Webinar: Industry perspectives

Kicking off our Innovating Industrial Decarbonisation series, we heard industry perspectives on the pivotal role that digital technologies can play for decarbonisation of industry.

Join us to hear from industry leaders about what they are already doing, and what more can be done to achieve the UK Government’s net zero target by 2050.

Webinar: Horizon scanning the policy landscape

The second webinar in our Innovating Industrial Decarbonisation series, exploring the role that digital technologies can play for decarbonisation of industry.

Join us to hear from policy experts on the current net zero policy landscape ahead of a big year of politics: including a Mayoral election, an expected General election, and the Chancellor's Spring Budget.

Webinar: Net zero standards and opportunities

The third webinar in our Innovating Industrial Decarbonisation series will explore the standards and reporting requirements that are crucial to enable decarbonisation of industry.

Standards provide common good practice and language agreed by all relevant stakeholders and define expectations that a product or system should meet.

Join us to hear from the British Standards Insititute (BSI), Simply Sustainable and Digital Catapult.

Webinar: Ecosystem building

The final webinar of our Innovating Industrial Decarbonisation series will look at what more can be done to facilitate collaboration for the decarbonisation of industry.

Join us to hear from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, HVM Catapult and Seagate Technology on key questions around:

  • What's are the key priorities for the Government's Industrial Decarbonisation team?
  • How are digital technologies, AI, digital twin etc, supporting industrial decarbonisation?
  • What Government levers, grants/funding etc, are supporting industry to decarbonise in line with net zero ambitions?
