AI-native networks will define the next decade of UK connectivity

The UK’s telecommunications sector is undergoing a seismic transformation, driven by the convergence of advanced connectivity with other areas of deep tech innovation. While telecommunications networks have long been designed to transport data, innovation is making it increasingly possible for future networks to sense and manage demand peaks and troughs, predict disruption, optimise performance and autonomously manage resources. This shift towards ‘Networks for AI’ will require infrastructure capable of supporting increasingly compute-intensive and distributed AI applications, while AI itself is making it possible for future networks to sense and manage peaks and troughs in demand, predict disruption, optimise performance and autonomously manage resources. Underpinning these capabilities is artificial intelligence (AI), which will act as the catalyst for broader change for the next phase of telecommunications infrastructure as it evolves into active decision-making systems.

At Digital Catapult, we have worked at the cutting-edge of innovation in advanced connectivity and telecommunications for over a decade, accelerating the development and practical deployment of data driven and open future networks. We recognise the opportunity that comes with converging advanced connectivity technologies with AI, and how it will benefit industry and the economy more broadly. In convening capabilities with deep tech startups and industry leaders, we are actively helping to shape the future of smarter, global telecommunications networks, with AI-native networks defining the next decade of UK connectivity.

The value of AI for advanced connectivity

Across many of our programmes, we support the integration and convergence of AI with other areas of deep tech innovation including the internet of things (IoT), quantum computing and digital twins. Industry leaders recognise the value of AI for telecommunications networks as well as the fundamental need advanced connected infrastructure to support AI, owing to its ability to offer better real-time analysis, facilitate dynamic resource allocation and enable predictive optimisation. In a space that is increasingly recognised for its role in sustaining critical infrastructure across the country, these capabilities are significant, underpinning both economic resilience and growth.

By offering real-time analysis on network performance for example, business leaders, engineers and partners can access reliable data that can keep customers informed on issues while accelerating repair and remediation efforts. Similarly, predictive optimisation can help businesses and organisations to allocate resource effectively, meeting demand for connectivity as and when necessary, likea large-scale live event or prioritise emergency services in case of a disaster. When we consider the practical application of AI for energy grid management, supply chain management, or defence and security systems, these capabilities are of immense value. And the same value applies to telecoms infrastructure where layers of deep technologies combine to allow for faster connectivity for consumers and businesses, and better connectivity between large numbers of devices (on a factory floor or in crowded spaces like train stations, for example). The value of this convergence in enacting broader industrial transformation also speaks to why telecommunications networks must be autonomous, and why AI-native networks will determine the future of network innovation.

How AI can propel network innovation

As the need to improve telecommunications infrastructure increases in parity with greater demand for advanced connectivity, the value of autonomous networks is significant. Telecommunications networks are increasingly complex with mounting demand for data, multiple connected devices and increasing cyber threats. In fact, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) reported on 204 "nationally significant" cyber incidents between September 2024 and August 2025, representing a 130% increase on the previousreporting period. Ofcom also reported that UK mobile data consumption now exceeds 1.2 billion GB every month, representing an increase of 18% year-on-year. With networks facing an array of complex challenges and ever-increasing reliance on telecommunications infrastructure, the convergence of AI with advanced connectivity will enable the telecommunications sector to keep pace with evolving challenges and facilitate a faster adoption of AI, equipping the UK to be future ready.

AI-enabled networks for example can self-optimise, self-configure, predict faults, reduce downtime and improve energy efficiency, demonstrating significant benefits in the application of AI across industry. In addition to this, we will soon see the advent of autonomous network operations, self-healing networks and AI-native 6G, which will usher in a new era of capabilities underpinned by telecommunications innovation, strengthening critical infrastructure and providing startups with the compute they need to scale. The complexity of future networks and value of integrating and applying AI mean that autonomy in advanced connectivity will soon become a necessity rather than an innovation and is where AI-native networks will play a critical role.

How Digital Catapult is accelerating AI-native networks

With modern society increasingly dependent on advanced connectivity for public services, healthcare, defence and energy systems, telecommunications is a strategic national capability that plays a critical role in driving economic growth. At Digital Catapult, we accelerate the development and deployment of data-driven and open future networks, championing safe, sustainable and resilient deep tech solutions that enable telecommunications networks to function effectively as critical national infrastructure.

As networks become increasingly intelligent and AI-native, ensuring that AI-powered telecommunications systems are fit for deployment and operation will be essential to the resilience of future economies. Through initiatives such as our Assurance Framework for Telecoms AI, REASON project and SUSTAINET, Digital Catapult is bringing together regulatory, industry and academic expertise to support verifiably trusted AI-enhanced critical infrastructure. This includes developing approaches to compliance and testing for AI-native networks, helping establish greater consistency, trust and reliability across the telecommunications sector, while creating the confidence needed to encourage further industry investment in AI-enabled network technologies.

In bridging the gap between industry, academia, the UK’s startup ecosystem and government, Digital Catapult has deep expertise in not only facilitating the practical application of AI across telecommunications networks but in ensuring its application is bothresponsible and sustainable. Our interventions in this space ensure that partners have the tools necessary to reap the rewards of applying AI-led solutions across telecommunications networks to improve resilience in the face of evolving risk and surging demand. This includes providing partners with access to cutting-edge facilities and delivering programmes that empower and advance AI-native telecommunications infrastructure.

Whether providing real-time analysis, dynamic resource allocation and predictive optimisation or helping the UK’s telecommunications sector to cope with demand for data, network densification, multiple connected devices or increasing cyber threats, AI-native networks will define the next decade of UK connectivity. As telecommunications networks are increasingly recognised as critical infrastructure, the convergence of AI and advanced connectivity must be enabled and achieved safely and sustainably, and in collaboration with organisations that can provide the frameworks and support to make it a success. This will equip the UK to be future ready and built on an era of UK connectivity that has AI and deep tech innovation at its core.
