Every year, a handful of technologies quietly shift from niche to strategically significant. Spotting them early is the job of horizon scanning: tracking the weak signals of change across the full science and technology landscape and assessing what they could mean for the UK. Within the Government Office for Science (GO-Science), this is exactly what the Technology Insights, Futures & Foresight Unit does as government's central horizon scanning function. 

This workshop will see GO-Science share the trends and signals it's tracking across the science and technology landscape as part of its horizon scanning work. techUK members will get the chance to test these signals against their own experience and shape a shared view of where emerging tech is really heading. 

This is a rare opportunity to hear directly from the team that advises government policymakers and officials on future scenarios and technology trends, and for techUK members to feed their insight straight into this thinking.

About GO-Science

The Government Office for Science is led by the Government Chief Scientific Adviser and works across all of government to put excellent science advice at the heart of decision making. It produces science advice for the Prime Minister and Cabinet, on areas including the industrial strategy, domestic issues, future scenarios, insights into key technologies, research investment strategy and emergencies, and supports the science capability of every government department through its network of Chief Scientific Advisers.

This session will take place in a workshop format, with tables centred around the following topic areas:  

Robotics and Embodied AI 

Topic summary: Advances in robotic dexterity, mobility, tactile sensing and AI systems capable of learning physical tasks are driving rapid progress in humanoid robotics and embodied AI, raising questions about the main opportunities and barriers to deployment across sectors over the next 10–20 years.  

Wildcard scenario: What if general-purpose robotics fails to live up to the hype and investment, and instead the most tangible value is to be realised through special-purpose or task-specific robotics? What does this mean for the UK's robotics strategy, capabilities, ecosystem and most promising end-user applications?

Quantum Computing and Simulation  

Topic summary: Advances in quantum hardware, software, hybrid quantum-classical systems and specialised applications are expanding the problems quantum computing and simulation may address before fully fault-tolerant machines become available.  

Wildcard scenario: What if quantum computing and simulation dramatically accelerate the discovery of advanced materials, such as high-temperature superconductors or fusion-enabling materials, and create early strategic advantage for the sectors able to use them first? 

Digital Twins and Personalised Medicine

Topic summary: Digital twins are beginning to model aspects of individual biology to support diagnosis, treatment decisions and therapy optimisation, with the potential to deliver meaningful improvements in health outcomes over the next 10–20 years.  

Wildcard scenario: What if digital twins become a routine part of healthcare, enabling personalised prevention, diagnosis and treatment at population scale while requiring major shifts in data governance, clinical validation, public trust and digital infrastructure?  

Photonics, Semiconductors and the Future of AI Compute

Topic summary: Growing demand for AI compute is increasing pressure on conventional semiconductor technologies, while photonic-semiconductor integration could offer new routes to improved performance and energy efficiency.  

Wildcard scenario: What if AI systems come to rely primarily on optical computing, with photonic architectures overtaking transistor scaling as the main driver of performance and reshaping compute supply chains, infrastructure needs and sources of strategic advantage?
