techUK Report: Towards a UK–EU Partnership for a New Age

Geopolitical turbulence, contested supply chains, and renewed pressure on European security have reinforced the importance of close UK–EU cooperation on technology and innovation. This report sets out the scale of UK–EU digital and security interdependence and the costs that continued divergence is already imposing on business.

The report was launched on 10 September 2026 at an event at the UK Ambassador's Residence in Brussels, bringing together representatives from the EU institutions, EU Member State Permanent Representations, the UK Government, and industry.

The report at a glance:

  • The UK and EU share one of the world's most integrated digital economies, worth over $350 billion in trade in 2024.

  • The UK is home to Europe's largest cyber sector, worth over €10.3 billion in 2025 and vital to tackling shared threats.

  • Divergence already carries a cost - lost recognition of conformity assessments means dual compliance costs, hitting SMEs hardest.

  • The report sets out clear next steps for policymakers, from UK participation in SAFE to mutual recognition agreements that cut costs for business.
