Real-time dashboards: turning IoT sensor data into action

Guest blog by Tom Morton, Founder of Archangel Cloud

The fast pace of growth in all things IoT (Internet of Things) is leading to the generation of vast amounts of data. How do we manage and make sense of this constant stream of information?

After all, the data alone is not of any use or value until it actually becomes visible and ultimately actionable.

From air quality to energy usage, motion monitoring to temperature readings, this never-ending flow of data delivered by IoT sensors needs to be handled by real time dashboards that turn raw data into insights that allow decision-makers to …make decisions!

Dashboards aggregate sensor data from multiple devices into a single interface. They transform continuous readings into intuitive charts, alerts, and trends that highlight what’s taking place in the here and now.

Providing analysts with the full picture allows for much better planning and problem solving.

When incidents occur, such as a fall or a temperature anomaly within a care home for example, dashboards need to be able to trigger instant and automatic notifications to alert key stakeholders as to the nature and severity of the incident, allowing for swift and effective remedial actions.

It’s all about shifting from the reactive to the proactive with immediate data analysis informing predictive and preventive foresight. Integration with analytics engines allows for the detection of patterns and forecast failures. The combination of this process with AI and machine learning makes for a powerful tool that can instantly predict maintenance requirements or adjust environmental conditions.

Making IoT data transparent and actionable in real time leads to organisations and their decision makers delivering improved safety, reduced costs and increased sustainability.

Data that was previously invisible becomes measurable and, ultimately, actionable and manageable.

The complex and ever-increasing nature of data acquisition requires the kind of analysis that only technology can deliver but it all leads to better outcomes and who doesn’t want that?

In short, real-time dashboards, such as those built by Archangel, provide an invaluable tool when it comes to the immediate and impactful interpretation and analysis of the vast amounts of data generated by IoT sensors.

Helping to deliver better insight and outcomes across an increasingly wide range of parameters, dashboards play a critical role in any data technology infrastructure and act as the point of contact between IoT and humans.
