Quantum Readiness Starts with Data Sovereignty

For many organisations, quantum computing still feels like a future challenge. Yet the preparations for a quantum-safe future need to begin today. 

As quantum technologies continue to advance, organisations across regulated industries are increasingly asking the same questions: How do we continue to innovate using cloud technologies while maintaining control of our most sensitive data? How do we protect information against future quantum threats without slowing digital transformation? 

The answer is unlikely to be a choice between public cloud and data sovereignty. Instead, organisations will need architectures that enable both. 

Across sectors including financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, defence and critical national infrastructure, data sovereignty has become a strategic priority. Regulations continue to evolve, customers expect greater transparency, and boards are placing increased emphasis on cyber resilience. At the same time, businesses want to take advantage of cloud services, AI and emerging technologies that drive efficiency and innovation. 

This is where confidential computing and post-quantum cryptography are becoming increasingly important. 

Confidential computing protects data while it is actively being processed, helping to ensure workloads remain secure even within shared cloud environments. Post-quantum cryptography, meanwhile, is designed to protect today's encrypted information against the future capabilities of quantum computers. 

Together, these technologies offer organisations a practical path towards quantum readiness without requiring them to abandon the flexibility and scalability that cloud platforms provide. 

However, technology alone is only part of the solution. 

Infrastructure also matters. Organisations need confidence that sensitive workloads can be hosted within trusted jurisdictions, supported by resilient, high-performance digital infrastructure that aligns with regulatory and operational requirements. Sovereign, regional data centres therefore play an increasingly important role in enabling secure digital transformation. 

At nLighten, we recently collaborated with Arqit to demonstrate how these technologies can work together in practice. The proof of concept combined confidential computing, post-quantum cryptography and regional European infrastructure to show that organisations can access the benefits of public cloud while maintaining control over where sensitive data is processed and protected. 

Importantly, the project was not about predicting a distant future. It focused on solving today's challenges around security, compliance and digital resilience while building foundations that are ready for tomorrow's quantum landscape. 

For organisations beginning their own quantum readiness journey, there are several practical steps worth considering: 

  • Understand where your most sensitive data resides and how it moves between environments. 
  • Review existing encryption strategies and begin assessing post-quantum alternatives. 
  • Evaluate how confidential computing can strengthen protection for critical workloads. 
  • Consider whether your infrastructure strategy supports evolving sovereignty and regulatory requirements. 
  • Engage with partners that can help bridge innovation with operational resilience. 

Quantum readiness is not a single technology deployment or a one-off project. It is an ongoing strategy that combines security, infrastructure, governance and collaboration. 

The organisations that begin planning today will be better positioned to adopt emerging technologies with confidence, meeting both regulatory expectations and customer trust requirements. 

By taking practical steps now, businesses can build digital environments that are resilient, sovereign and ready for the next generation of computing.
