Given that nobody really understands data centres, a whole mythology has built up around them. This paper explores and debunks some common perceptions.

This discussion paper identifies and addresses some of the common assumptions about the way that data centres use power. These are expressed as a series of assertions that have actually been made about data centres. Against each assertion we have explained whether it is true or false and why. The assertions are loosely grouped into themes - including power use, efficiency, consumer perceptions, future trends  and calculations.

The paper has appeared in multiple publications since it was published.
