This document provides an addendum to our 2016 report “Silver Linings: the Implications of Brexit for the UK Data Centre Sector” and should be read in conjunction with it.
In that initial report we outlined the opportunities and challenges that Brexit presents to the sector and identified the actions that we thought necessary to protect our sector and the wider digital economy that it supports and enables.
In this update we re-evaluate the balance of risk and opportunity in the light of UK government decisions and other developments in the Brexit policy agenda during the intervening months.
We revisit the same policy areas we looked at before: data flows, trade, skills, energy costs, inward investment and environmental regulation and take the view that while there have been some minor adjustments, our initial appraisal of the balance of risks and opportunities is largely unchanged.
What is clear is that uncertainty regarding the arrangements governing our departure is still of concern across most areas, although we are beginning to see more clarity regarding the Government’s intentions in critical areas like data flows.
