techUK, Syntec Numerique and Bitkom set out Principles for the Digital Single Market

The leading tech trade bodies in the UK, France and Germany have today set out the eight principles that they argue should guide the development of the Digital Single Market. Together they are calling on policy makers and politicians to apply these principles as they develop the policy and legislative proposals that will be at the heart of the European Digital Single Market.

The three trade associations will be meeting with EU policy makers and MEPs ahead of the first raft of digital single market proposals that will be published by the European Commission in the autumn.

Representing 4500 tech companies across Europe's largest economies, techUK, Syntec Numerique and Bitkom are strong supporters of the EU's push towards building a Digital Single Market that can be a powerful engine to rejuvenate the European economy.

Across Germany, France and the UK, tech companies are driving innovation, helping businesses become more productive and delivering huge economic and social benefits for consumers and citizens. The Digital Single Market provides an opportunity to accelerate this, creating growth and new jobs for Europe.

"The EU Digital Single Market is at the heart of the competitiveness agenda," said techUK CEO Julian David "Recent estimates show that the right implementation could create 3.8m jobs[1] across Europe, so it's crucial we get this right."

"The fact that our three organisations agree on these points says a lot about the focus and ambition of technology companies across Europe," said Dr. Bernhard Rohleder, CEO of Bitkom. "There is a real sense of digital optimism. By building a bigger market with fewer barriers to trade we can help European companies grow and scale. This is about building on success."

"These eight principles should be used by policy makers and politicians across Europe to test ideas and refine our policies," said Laurent Baudart, CEO of Syntec Numerique "if applied critically they will help us understand what we should and shouldn't do to build the Digital Single Market."

Welcoming the united approach, Vicky Ford, UK MEP and member of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group, commented "It's great that digital companies from across Europe are singing off the same song sheet. This will help those of us involved in updating the regulatory framework to support our innovative tech sector ".

The eight principles are:

1. Embrace change

2. Embrace global

3. Make it easier not harder for businesses to innovate

4. Make the world simpler not more complicated

5. Leave space for innovation to overcome barriers and bottlenecks

6. Use the right tools for the job

7. Be wary of unintended consequences

8. Move at pace
