In June 2019, the Government commissioned the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) to carry out an analysis of proposed minimum salary threshold for migrant workers and the range at which they could be set. The MAC was also commissioned in September 2019 to research on how an Australian-style points-based system could work in the UK. The salary thresholds were considered in the context of this immigration system.
Responding to the Migration Advisory Committee’s review of salary thresholds and a points-based system, techUK's Deputy CEO, Antony Walker said:
"This is another carefully considered report from the MAC that provides further useful guidance for government that we hope will shape its future immigration system. We are pleased that the report has taken on board many of the concerns and views expressed by business.
"techUK welcomes the proposal to reduce the minimum salary threshold for skilled migrants entering the UK and proposed exceptions to the threshold for new entrants. Government should use these recommendations to build a post-Brexit immigration system that works for the whole economy.
"There is a huge amount of work to do to put a new immigration system in place by January 1st 2021. Government will need to continue to consult with businesses to ensure to ensure a smooth transition to the new system."
