In our first year as a Council in 2018, we produced a best practice report on Gender Pay Gap reporting, expanding techUK’s Returners Hub which supports those who have taken career breaks to return to work in the tech sector, and continued to support initiatives like the Tech Talent Charter and WISE Campaign’s My Skills My Life, an online platform which provides girls with female role models in STEM and demystify the career pathways into tech aimed at moving the dial towards gender parity in STEM.
This year, the Council have had a number of successes including supporting techUK’s first flagship skills conference Creating Digital Futures, and relaunching the Council newsletter which is now one of techUK’s top 5 newsletters. The Council has also provided insights and blog posts on a range of skills and diversity topics, spoken at external conferences, and have continued supporting the initiatives from the previous year.
As we transition into our third year, we are looking to expand our remit to more equitably address the wider diversity and inclusion agenda and take concrete steps on helping the UK develop skills for the modern economy.
The purpose of the Skills and Diversity Council:
The Council will support techUK with thought leadership around skills for the modern economy, from early years through to lifelong learning. This will include making recommendations to improve the existing system – e.g. determining our public position on apprenticeships and T-Levels – and scoping the policy needs of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Supporting diverse tech talent from classroom to boardroom. The Council provides support to initiatives including the Tech Talent Charter, WISE Campaign’s My Skills My Life and help to decide which diversity initiatives techUK should be supporting. The Council will also support and lead techUK campaigns around Gender and Ethnicity Pay Reporting and international days marking diversity.

techUK launched the Skills and Diversity Council at the beginning of 2018 following the merge of both the Women in Tech Council and the Skills, Talent and Migration Group.
The Council brings together some of the most influential networks and people working across the industry to champion diversity in tech, relating to: ethnicity, LGBT+, disability, neurodiversity, social mobility and gender. As well as discussing new approaches which help to address the skills gap today and, in the future, including successful multi stakeholder partnerships, innovative recruitment strategies and lifelong learning.
