On 1 May 2019, Penny Mordaunt MP was appointed as the new Secretary of State in the Ministry of Defence on 1 May 2019, following the departure of Gavin Williamson MP. In addition to her duties as Defence Secretary, she will also retain her position as Minister for Women and Equalities, a post she has held since April 2018.

In Parliament, Penny served on the European Scrutiny Committee, Defence Select Committee, and as chairman of the APPGs for Life Science and for Ageing and Older People.

Commenting on her appointment, she said:

I'm delighted to be back at the Ministry of Defence. It is an honour and a priviledge to work with the best armed forces and defence civilians in the world.
