On 1 May 2019, Penny Mordaunt MP was appointed as the new Secretary of State in the Ministry of Defence on 1 May 2019, following the departure of Gavin Williamson MP. In addition to her duties as Defence Secretary, she will also retain her position as Minister for Women and Equalities, a post she has held since April 2018.
Before moving over to the MOD, Penny held the position of Secretary of State for International Development from November 2017 to May 2019. Prior to this she was Minister of State for Department for Work and Pensions from July 2016 to November 2017. She also served as Minister of State for the Armed Forces from May 2015 until July 2016. Penny was elected Conservative MP for Portsmouth North in 2010.
In Parliament, Penny served on the European Scrutiny Committee, Defence Select Committee, and as chairman of the APPGs for Life Science and for Ageing and Older People.
